What's On - 2013 EXPO ACTION

WOODSHED WORKSHOPS

The WoodShed houses workshops and toolmakers. Join in Workshops during the weekend or just watch from the side-lines. Our toolmakers showcase a selection of beautifully crafted hand-made tools including planes, chisels, saws, tools for marking out, waterstones for sharpening edge tools and more. These truly are tools for the woodworker with craftsmanship in mind – they make woodworking even more of a pleasure.

Wood Workers

From the sophisticated to the sublime, from the radically rustic to the amorphously abstract, our woodworkers never cease to delight and amaze with their breadth of vision for our native and weed timbers. Whether you want furniture for inside or out, or a superbly crafted wooden gift, you’ll find it at the Expo. Seize the opportunity to discuss your ideas for ‘that special piece” - the feature in your home.

There’s something for every budget and every taste.

The Music Makers

The Sunshine Coast Hinterland is home to a wealth of instrument makers from the Australian Association of Musical Instrument Makers (AAMIM) who build and repair a wide variety of traditional, folk and modern instruments. AAMIM’s aims encourage the making of high-class musical instruments and the use of Australian timbers - admirable!

It is a pleasure and an honour to have them at the Expo.

The Millers

Watch the sawdust fly as the mobile mills recycle dead, dying, windblown and nuisance trees into usable timber. Bring your trailer, take home a slab and craft your own one-off coffee table from our beautiful local timbers. Red and white cedar, camphor laurel, white beech, rose gum, black bean, blue quandong - the list goes on ....

Heritage Woodcrafts

Get a glimpse of the time-honoured techniques and tools used by the white settlers, the timber workers, who first opened up the Range in search of the beautiful Red cedar and other rainforest timbers. These skills and tools – a part of our bush heritage and lore – are fast vanishing from the Australian landscape.

The WoodShed

The newest addition to the Expo, the WoodShed will house workshops, the toolmakers and a selection of timber. Workshops will be running throughout the day – full program coming soon. Join in or just watch from the side-lines. The toolmakers will showcase a selection of beautifully crafted hand-made tools including planes, chisels, saws, tools for marking out, waterstones for sharpening edge tools and more. These truly are tools for the woodworker with craftsmanship In mind – they make woodworking even more of a pleasure.

Taste Maleny

Taste Maleny Produce offers visitors a treasure chest of local, fresh and wild treats. Be tempted by taste delights from spicy bushfood sauces to hand-crafted cheeses. Stock your pantry with new taste sensations or put together a hamper of local produce for Mothers' Day. Liven up your BBQ with low fat emu sausages and pies. Maleny’s fresh wood-fired breads, homemade pickles and boutique cheeses will give your pantry a country boost.

Sustainable Lifestyle

Sustainability is about more than timber – the sustainable lifestyle section showcases products that are both socially and ecologically sustainable and that have minimal negative impacts on the environment and those who live within it. Learn how you can lighten your footprint in your own home and leave a brighter future for your children and grandchildren.

Think Globally Act Locally

Visit the NRM – the natural resource management – displays to see how you can help conserve and protect the fabulous biodiversity in South east Queensland. With everything from bats to birds to butterflies, from rivers to rainforests, from VCA’s to volunteering – this tent is a wealth of information for those who care.

Tree Farming For The Planet

Our future timber is destined to come more and more from privately-owned forests as our appreciation of old growth forests means that we cease to log them. Private forests provide far more than timber – they are now recognized as an important farm asset and income stream. They reward us through repairing and protecting our land, providing biodiversity and habitat, shelter and support for agricultural and grazing enterprises, landscape aesthetics, bushfoods and much more. The Barung Nursery supports private forestry by supplying good quality tree stock for boutique and larger plantations.

Entertainment at the expo

For the kids there's clean country fun to be had on the hay bale maze, or they can join in some face painting, art workshops or candle-making. Or they can just watch in amazement the street theatre... for the young and young-at-heart there are the outrageous antics of Great Scott and Gypsy Loco – Maleny’s zany roving gypsy jazz trio… for those wanting a musical interlude, grab a drink and head for the Maleny Music tent showcasing local talent such as the Hayden Hack Infusion, Tommy Leonard, Noel Gardner and many more.
