OUR WOODWORKERS

From the sophisticated to the sublime, from the radically rustic to the amorphously abstract, our woodworkers never cease to delight and amaze with their breadth of vision for our native and weed timbers. Whether you want furniture for inside or outside, a unique piece as a feature or a superbly crafted wooden gift, the Expo has it all.

There’s something for every budget and every taste.

THE MUSIC MAKERS

Unbeknown to many, the Sunshine Coast Hinterland is home to a wealth of instrument makers, all of whom belong to Australian Association of Musical Instrument Makers (AAMIM) who build and repair a wide variety of traditional, folk and modern instruments.

Their aims include and to encourage the use of high class musical instruments, and to encour- age the use of Australian timbers and materials - admirable!

It is a pleasure and an honour to have them at the Expo.

Millers

THE MILLERS

Always a drawcard – start up the mill and see the people swarm. There’s nothing like watching the sawdust fly as the mobile mills transform waste logs into usable timber.

Bring your trailer, take a slab home, craft your own one-off coffee table from our beautiful local timbers. Red and white cedar, camphor laurel, white beech, rose gum, black bean, blue quandong and the list goes on ....

Our mobile millers recycle those dead, dying, windblown and nuisance trees into re-usable timber for furniture and building.

TREE FARMING FOR THE PLANET

Our future timber is destined to come more and more from privately-owned forests as our appreciation of old growth forests means that we cease to log them. Private forests provide far more than timber – they are now recognized as an important farm asset and income stream.

They reward us through repairing and protecting our land, providing biodiversity and habitat, shelter and support for agricultural and grazing enterprises, landscape aesthetics, bushfoods and much more.

The Barung Nursery supports private forestry by supplying good quality tree stock for boutique and larger plantations.

FIGS IN THE FOREST - a Barung TreeLine project

Barung is always keen to involve the community. This year's Figs in the Forest project forms the Expo’s feature exhibition, where we'll be showcasing the works of more than 30 local artists.

These days our majestic ‘figs’ are mainly seen as isolated paddock trees left for shade and shelter on Blackall Range farms, as a grandfather street or garden tree like the controversial sentinel outside Maleny Primary School, and as a monumental giant in rainforest remnants such as Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. But Figs are truly iconic trees in our landscape and keystone species in our forests.

Visit Figs in the Forest to see what these magnificent trees invoke in our local artists..

FOR THE KIDS

For youth inspired by the Winter Olympic’s awesome snowboarders, join in the skateramp-making workshops and watch the thrilling aerial bike displays throughout the weekend. Those without the ‘daredevil’ streak can join in candle-making workshops, fall over laughing at Great Scott’s street theatre antics and explore the magical power of communal rhythm and melody in merimba workshops with Fatima.

PROUD TO PRESENT:

STAN CEGLINSKI - THE REAL THING

Stan Ceglinski is a big old fashioned style of a man, the image of the timber getters of old, our early pioneers.

Stan represents the romantic outback of Banjo Patterson, the battler outback of Henry Lawson. He is rough and unpolished (may he never be polished). Stan Ceglinski is the real thing... If you want to learn how to build a bark hut or a post and rail fence, how to use an adze or split some shingles, Stan is your man. A consummate showman, Stan Ceglinski is in touch with the earth, passing on a host of knowledge our country

THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY

Visit the NRM – the natural resource management – tent to learn how you can contribute to environmental initiatives that conserve and protect our fabulous biodiversity in this region.

With everything from bats to birds to butterflies, from rivers to rainforests, from VCA’s to volunteering – this tent is a wealth of information for those who care.

SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY

The Expo offers a major fundraising opportunity for many of our local organisations – and benefits others along the way by default. Maleny High raise much-needed funds while perfecting the humble fish and chip, and the Lions pull together to support Landcare with Real Food Café fare. Others such as the Maleny Community Centre and Conondale Rural Fire Brigade run food outlets, while the Maleny Arts & Crafts Group and the Quota Quilt Club just benefit through the sheer numbers of people in town!

Barung Landcare - the Blackall Range's not-for-profit landcare group

  • The Barung Nursery propagates local native plants for revegetation and environmental rehabilitation projects.
  • Barung Contracting Service assists local landholders to achieve environmental restoration works on private land.
  • The Barung office is a meeting place for locals, providing invaluable information on everything pertaining to our Hinterland environment.

Any surplus generated by the Maleny Wood Expo goes towards keeping Barung open and staffed for the Blackall Range community.
