SUSTAINABLE LIVING

Finding ways to live sustainably, including coming to terms with limited fossil fuel supplies, is possibly the biggest challenge facing us as a species. We will all be increasingly involved in solving these issues during the coming years. How can you make a difference?

There is no need for self-sacrificing when considering eco-lifestyle. One aspect of eco-lifestyle is exploring ways to reduce household energy use and greenhouse gas emissions by choosing the right design and materials for your house. Whether building a new house or renovating an existing one, materials and designs that work with the local environment and climate can lower energy bills and increase comfort levels.

The Expo has expanded beyond sustainable use of timbers and now includes the bigger picture – a more holistic view of sustainable living. Do the right thing today and leave a lighter footprint for our children tomorrow!

Farm Forestry

Trees are the source of all furniture exhibited at the Expo. A broad range of quality rainforest and eucalypt timbers have been sourced from the subtropical forests of the Sunshine Coasts’ Blackall Range for over 100 years. However, little regard has ever been given to the sustainability of this valuable natural and economic resource.

Revitalising the timber industry on the Blackall Range depends on landholders growing the future wood resource. Forestry is an ecologically sound land-use that is well-suited to the diverse lifestyles of local landholders large and small. Farm forestry also offers a profitable way of addressing local landcare problems and restoring nature.

Displays offering guidance on: Fine timbers that can be grown in this region; Designing a forest that suits your land and lifestyle; Integrating a forest enterprise with other land-uses and landcare goals; Direct and indirect financial returns possible from well-managed forests; Design, Establishment, Maintenance and Harvesting services available to farm foresters; and Forestry tools and equipment.
